Dear Families of Schiesher School,
As I take a moment to reflect on my time as principal of Schiesher Elementary School, I cannot help but feel a sense of collective accomplishment like I have never known. The growth and progress that we have all shared and enjoyed has made Schiesher Elementary an award winning school!
Among the things I am most proud of, one of them has to be the implementation of our Character Counts program and the building wide expectations that were developed along with that program. Last year our Character program was extended to include the direct teaching and learning of the Social Emotional Learning Standards. These programs woven together have resulted in a school that supports children in their character and social / emotional development.
Another area where Schiesher has been proactive and forward thinking is our Targeted Instruction Block and our work with Response to Intervention (RtI). I am proud to say that our system-wide process of looking at data has supported us in our development of programs that meet the academic needs of students, regardless of their level of achievement. Through strong Professional Learning Communities and superior teachers, Schiesher is a place where students can receive an education that is truly developed to meet his/her needs.
Schiesher continues the transition and implementation of the research based and internationally benchmarked Common Core State Standards. This process will continue through 2014-2015. The purpose and rationale of the new CCSS is to ensure that high school graduates in every part of the nation have the knowledge and skills necessary for college and/or career readiness. Schiesher teachers have been learning about CCSS and have been revising our literacy program for the past 2 years so that our current classroom instruction will fit into the more rigorous demands of the CCSS. This transition is hard work, but has been extremely rewarding and I am very proud of the growth Schiesher has made toward implementation of these standards.
While all of this work has been wonderfully rewarding, it would not have been possible without the dedication and passion found in each and every one of the professionals at Schiesher Elementary School. From the teachers who connect with children and who are constantly improving their craft; to the instructional aides who support our classrooms; to the maintenance crew that provides a safe campus; to the nurses, special education staff, technology assistants, office staff and lunchroom staff who are key supportive professionals; Schiesher is a wonderful school because of each of them and their contribution to your child’s education. Mix that dedicated group of people with a home and family structure that supports the learning and it is easy to see why Schiesher is such an amazing school.
As I look to my new position with excitement, I will most certainly miss the hustle and bustle that only an elementary school building can provide. Thank you for your support and cooperation over the last seven years, it has meant more to me than I could possibly ever express.
