Before children learn to read print, it's necessary that they develop what is called phonemic awareness. Phonemic awareness involves sounds that make up words. If your child is phonemically aware, that means that he/she can:
hear rhymes
produce rhymes
blend sounds
segment sounds
delete sounds
and
substitute sounds
